We also awarded two 40 hour space residencies to Marcus Whale and Jasmin Lancaster. We want to thank all artists who put in proposals for this opportunity, and to thank Ivey Wawn and Chris Gurusamy who, alongside our director, Jane McKernan, made up the panel making decisions. 
 
Nasim Patel is the first Moving Ideas resident off the block in the studio.

Nasim will work alongside Louie Wisby to develop the choreographic systems for a full length version of his work 'Tell Distance', which will be presented later this year at Sydney Fringe Festival as part of TheLab@UNSW.

'Tell Distance' intersects choreography and projection to complicate and question the construction of dominant narratives. The work takes video editing as its primary choreographic device, featuring two performers synchronising movement and spoken text with life-sized projections of themselves. 

'Tell Distance' is an uncannily digital take on live performance that interrogates how storytelling functions in the modern era. It is inspired and informed by Nasim's 2025 Honours thesis in cultural and colonial studies, which examined how Australian colonial narratives are constructed and maintained by careful erasure of non-white labour and reworkings of the historical record. Primarily, the spoken text of the work discusses how we experience and perceive our colonial surroundings and Anthropocene-affected environment. The two performers casually discuss everyday interactions, observations, and travels with dialogue that is subsequently warped within the iterative and edited choreographic world of 'Tell Distance'. As the text is edited in real time, new sentences and meanings are forcefully constructed, revealing the obtuse and at times sinister nature of our social language norms. The work asks the audience exactly how everyday language reveals the subconscious ways we imagine 'place'—how do we 'tell distance'?

ReadyMade Works is pleased to offer four Moving Ideas residencies across June - September 2026. Support is available for one-week (40 hours) of residency space at the ReadyMade Works studio. Travel and accommodation support is provided to one regionally based NSW artist.

The aim of the Moving Ideas residency program is to support NSW-based dance artists to do their creative work in a funded capacity. Artists can apply to work on a creative project, explore a new idea, or develop their practice. The residency is open to professional, emerging and established NSW-based artists working with dance, choreography and movement based practices.

Support:

• An artist fee of $1300 for 40-hours of studio time

• A collaborator or production budget of $500

• An allowance of $1000 for travel and accommodation is available for one regionally based NSW artist

• Access budget allocation if required

• Video or photographic documentation

 

Timing:

• Four 40-hour residencies are available to be undertaken between June to September 2026

• Residencies will be scheduled in consultation with ReadyMade Works staff

• ReadyMade Works will facilitate a closed showing event for invited peers and community at the culmination of residency period 

 

Who can apply:

• Professional, emerging or established dance artists

• Individuals or groups of artists

• NSW-based artists. Interstate artists can be involved as collaborators

• Collaborators can be from any discipline and can include outside eyes, or mentors.
