Shared Practice

Shared Practice is an opportunity to engage in the different creative practices of leading local and visiting dance artists in a creative, workshop-style format.

Each session includes a form of warm-up before moving into the improvisation and/or choreographic processes of the facilitator. The sessions are facilitated by established local dance artists and visiting national and international guest artists. Shared Practice is open to anyone who is interested in engaging in dance and choreography based practices. To know more about the Facilitators click on the images above.

Please get in touch if you would like more information about the sessions or are interested in leading a Shared Practice session:

Wed 26 May - Ivey Wawn

Practice: Ivey is planning to share a practice that forms a fundamental part of a project that she has been working on for a couple of years. This practice is called 'mourning dancing' and uses memory as a primary tool for building relationships to your past, present and future selves, to the others you share and have shared space with and to the space of dancing. "It can go many ways, but I am hoping that in the context of a one-off time shared together, that we can make it a positively charged time. I would love to see you there!"

Bio: Ivey Wawn is a dancer living and working primarily on Gadigal Land. She works mostly as a dancer in the work of other artists and sometimes also makes her own work that takes different forms; from lecture, through video, to live performance. Such works are presented in art galleries, virtual spaces and theatres.

Ivey makes dance-based work for various contexts, drawing poetics from economic and microbial systems to develop choreography for the human scale. She works extensively as a performer and collaborator, primarily between Sydney and Melbourne, sells her labour as a waiter in between projects, and is a current student of Political Economy at the University of Sydney.

Wed 2 June - Lee Serle

Practice: Choreographing in the moment

Together through the practice of improvisation, we will share and question our processes when choreographing in the moment. Abandoning score and predetermined structures, we will attempt to find clarity within our practice through the consideration and application of our embodied histories, rapid fire decision making, removing judgment and desire for outcome.

Bio: Lee Serle (b. Melbourne 1981) graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Dance in 2003. His work has been presented in France, USA, Colombia, Lebanon and Australia, and commissioned to create new works for the Lyon Opera Ballet, Sydney Dance Company, Lucy Guerin Inc, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Dancenorth, Victorian College of the Arts, and Colombian visual artist Mateo López. Lee has performed in the works of many notable choreographers including; Trisha Brown, Lucy Guerin, Tere O’Connor, Gideon Obarzanek, Shelley Lasica, among many others, and has received Fellowships from Rolex Arts Institute, Australia Council for the Arts (Creative Australia Fellowship) and City of Sydney.

June 9 - Martin del Amo

Practice: Last year, Martin was the recipient of ReadyMade’s inaugural Sustaining Practice Residency. His aim was to re-establish a studio practice by reconnecting with the methodological strategies he has developed over the last 20 years, both as a solo artist and a choreographer/director. For Shared Practice, Martin is going to offer an insight into some of his discoveries. The focus will be on warm up approaches and improvisational processing.

Bio: Martin del Amo is a Sydney-based choreographer and dancer with more than 20 years of professional experience. He started out as an acclaimed solo artist. Over the last decade, he has also built a strong reputation as creator of group works and solos for other dancers. Martin extensively works as a teacher, mentor, dramaturg, movement consultant and dance writer.
